Testimonials

Hear from our volunteers….

“It’s a privilege to be here serving the people living in the heart of Geylang. I recall our first patient, an Indian national who had fever for five days. After a urine test, I found him to have a urinary tract infection. I remember very vividly how Pastor Reuben of the Indian fellowship ministered to him while I was prescribing antibiotics. It touched my heart to be able to witness this - Dr Desmond Mao

I remember my first time at the clinic and being very impressed by how well stocked it is. The seeds of compassion and the work that all of us can do, in our little ways, will take root and help people to develop and grow. - Dr Ong Pei Yuin

There's always plenty of action at the clinic! Patients, American students dropping in, Dr Tan Lai Yong at the clinic...I feel privileged to be part of the action at HealthServe. - Dr Michael Fung

Being a non-medically trained volunteer, I was apprehensive about my first two sessions as a clinic assistant. However, the warmth and friendliness of the doctors on duty and the HealthServe staff touched me and put me at ease. It’s wonderful to see everyone working in unity. - Yenny Ho
HEALTHSERVE COMMUNITY CLINIC - CROSSING THE DIVIDE

AS a volunteer of HealthServe Geylang, I have been spending time with some of the sex workers the last few weeks. I got to know Karla, who works as one of the sex workers in the area. She speaks some English and told me she is interested to improve her conversational English. Marilyn asked if I'd like to volunteer to teach her. I was excited but nervous at the same time, as I honestly did not have the desire to teach English. But I knew this would be a great way to befriend Karla and get to know her better.

I met up with Karla one day outside the brothel with her friend at the place they normally stood. I felt extremely awkward initially. Karla wanted to stay outside the brothel and learn Englishs there so I sat at the doorstep with her and her friend, Patty, who just mostly laughed at us. As I asked Karla questions, she just stared at me and said: "I do not understand your English, the way you talk!"

I asked Karla about her family. We talked and found out more about each other. This experience is definitely something I will always treasure. I felt the connection with them as friends -- they are just like any girl my age, who enjoy laugh and talking. They laughed at the colour of my eyes, my skin and other parts of my body! They really made me laugh! The very fact that the girls sat there with me for so long is truly amazing because normally they are under pressure to "work" and be available for clients, but somehow the street was all quiet that day and no agents seem to be around. I know this was God's favour and that His Spirit did something great. – By Gillian McCullough. N Ireland
