Service Learning

If your school or organisation is keen on community work or embark on service learning projects, HealthServe can help you get started and organised.

Our Aims

To raise awareness, empathy and acceptance of vulnerable and marginalised communities in Singapore and beyond

To inspire and involve students and adults through experiential and service learning programmes and thereby reduce social stigma

To train volunteers in healthcare issues

To develop a constructive approach towards community development

Service Learning for Students | Leveraging on our experience of involving students in HealthServe's work, we aim to provide a hands-on platform for students to increase their social awareness, apply the skills they gain in school and even learn new ones to positively contribute to the community.

Service Learning Reflections | Reflection is a critical component of Service Learning, where participants take time to recall, evaluate, and reconstruct ideas and processes to improve and shape desired outcomes.

The reflection video below was created by students from the Psychology & Community Services, School of Humanities, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, after their orientation programme with migrant workers in Little India (2007/2008).

Service Learning Celebration | At the end of every Service Learning programme, the celebration component is part of the learning methodology. For the NP (BA) WIL (Work Integrated Learning) FINALE 2007, the Ngee Ann Polytechnic Song Composing Club specially came up with an original composition*.

Volunteers and Overseas Experiential Learning

Medical Missions | Many medical students arrange for short overseas medical missions to fulfill a practical component of their medical elective programme. These missions allow medical students to have first-hand experience with communities in need of medical aid. Upon their return to Singapore, HealthServe aims to engage and nurture their learning experience further, through local projects after their mission stints.

Distribution of Public Health Information | HealthServe works with health agencies such as the Health Promotion Board to promote HIV education and prevention in the community. We work with volunteers and organisations to distribute pamphlets and flyers to commercial sex workers, migrant workers and vulnerable groups in the community.

Elementary Conversational English for Foreign Workers | A local church offers a 6-week course for foreign workers to gain proficiency and confidence in conversational English. The course is conducted free of charge. Classes will be arranged when there is sufficient demand.
